Studying the Environmental Impacts of Warfare Using GIS: Khe Sanh, Vietnam
This research takes a look at the damage exerted by warfare on the physical landscape as an anthropogenic impact upon the environment. Impacts of explosive munitions upon the landscape are capable of moving large amounts of sediment, resulting in long-term changes in an area’s micro and mesotopography. During the Siege of Khe Sanh, aircraft delivered nearly 99,000 tons of munitions over the battlefield, more than all the tonnage of explosive munitions deployed by the allied forces in the Pacific during World War II. As a result Khe Sanh is a particularly good place to study the geographic changes associated with war, as well as the subsequent reforestation and soil development. This presentation will discuss a field study performed in Khe Sanh in the summer of 2009, GIS techniques used in the study, and the findings of the research.
How Consumer Mobile Technology is Changing GIS
The most recent statistics tell us that there are currently about 95.8 million active smartphones in the United States, a 67 percent increase in just one year. With GPS embedded within these devices, how does the ability to pinpoint our location change how we interact with the world around us? People are now using Location-Based Services (LBS) for things such as navigation, social networking, resource tracking, games, and proximity-based notifications. The integration of our location into the technology we use has not only made life easier for many people, it has created new opportunities for businesses. However, while the benefits of Location-Based Services are exciting, there have been concerns about the users’ privacy and potential abuse of the technology. This presentation will take a look at the technology from a geographer’s perspective, and discuss how this technology is being used and the future outlook of Location-Based Services.

Routing applications can be used across a number of industries and in government to create efficiencies throughout organizations and to reduce operating costs. For government, uses include creating optimal routes for buses picking up special needs’ children to managing fleets of snow plow trucks. In private industry, time is money and mapping, routing and tracking applications are being used in service and delivery industries across-the-board. In this session, we’ll discuss how efficiencies are created using routing applications, as well as showcase a variety of applications. We’ll also discuss the advantages and disadvantages and what to look for in a routing application to ensure it meets your organization’s needs.

Presentation: Welcome to NodeJS
Presented by: Marc Harter
Time and Location: 12:45 - 2:00 PM, Room 3-115
NodeJS is a Server Side JavaScript (SSJS) implementation built off the Google Chrome V8 JavaScript engine. It is grown considerably in popularity since its initial public release a little over a year ago. Some have called 2011, the "Year of Server Side JavaScript." Why? Is it just a fad? What does it offer different from other server side languages and frameworks? What makes it stand out? In this talk, we will be discussing the answers to those questions as we look at design philosophy behind NodeJS. We will also look into its implementation and some demo applications. The goal is for you to come away with a clear understanding of what NodeJS is, what problems it tries to solve, and how it could be used in your application stack.

Presenting: How GIS Applications Can Help Communities Thrive, Even During a Recession
Summary: In this presentation the use of web and GIS technologies to streamline data distribution to the public and to build economic stability will be presented. Low cost geo-web solutions allow municipalities to become more efficient in these lean times as communities of all sizes throughout the nation are struggling to weather the storm of budget cuts that seem to have no end. Implementing GIS applications allows these municipalities to become more efficient and enables them to deliver the information the public is searching for in an inexpensive and convenient manner. This can reduce staff time spent helping citizens gather data by increasing accessibility. Communities utilizing these low-cost GIS applications can help drive economic development by making data freely available to site selectors, small businesses, and entrepreneurs looking to start a business. The GIS and web technologies used to create these types of applications and their effect on economies will be examined and discussed.
